GREENFIELD PARK

Location: 7025 Route 52 West Greenfield Park, NY 12435

Greenfield Park Marker Text:

Greenfield Park & Ulster Heights are two of many Catskill communities evocative of Eastern Europe. For Ashkenazi Jews arriving in the early 20th century, its forests, hills, and farms were reminiscent of the countrysides in which they once lived.

By the 1930s, Tudor became a popular architectural style in America. Its facades of stucco and wood were found at the Tamarack Lodge, Seven Gables, and Grand Mountain Hotel. After WWII, both the landscape and architecture provided an atmosphere of Old Europe, creating a powerful sense of place for visitors, including Holocaust survivors. Several bungalow colonies in the area, notably Excelsior Lodge, later renamed Four Seasons Lodge, were founded by survivors.

In the 1960s, famed architect Morris Lapidus redesigned the Tamarack into a sleek Miami-inspired resort. Buddy Hackett, Cream, Ella Fitzgerald, The Four Tops, Rod Stewart, and The Who performed at the Tamarack.

Both hamlets had a combined 62 hotels and 51 bungalow colonies such as Adler’s, New Alpine, Pioneer, Roseville, Ulster Lake House and Hillcrest Bungalows. In addition, it was home to Utopia Lodge, an African American resort.

SPEAKERS

Rachel Deyo, Great-granddaughter of Dave and Este Levinson, owners of the Tamarack (just down the road) and its sister hotel, the Algiers in Miami.

Dr. Peter Allen Chester, son of Holocaust survivors who has pent nearly his entire life in the Borscht Belt, and called this area home for 45 years. A true expert on the area’s history, Peter is a walking encyclopedia of the Borscht Belt.

Lisa Hackett, the daughter of Buddy Hackett and Sherry Dubois. Lisa is the steward of her father’s comedic legacy. In celebrating her dad on what would have been his 100th birthday, last summer Lisa launched the web site, BuddyHackett.tv, a family-operated platform dedicated to preserving and sharing his work. The site features remastered comedy specials, rare performances, and archives aimed at keeping Buddy Hackett’s unique brand of humor alive for new generations.
